Eyebrow Fads Over the Years — Part 2

Welcome back to the iBrows Studio blog series covering some of the most notable eyebrow trends that we’ve seen over the years. In our last blog post, we touched on different eyebrow looks from the 1920s all the way up to the 1980s. Today, we’ll go over some of the more recent eyebrow stylings that we’ve seen, most of which you’ve probably seen in your lifetime. Let’s dive right in.

Skinny Eyebrows — The 1990s

Most of us are guilty of plucking our eyebrows far too thin at one point in our life, and the 90s are to blame! This era was all about having thin eyebrows. Now that we’ve had some time to go over prior looks, we know that we’ve seen this styling before. It was always used to help create a dramatic look and draw attention to the other features of the eyes. While movie stars were often the ones that this look was taken from, it was actually model Kate Moss that inspired the look this go around.

Thin as Can Be Eyebrows — The 2000s

This is the trend that so many women are still recovering from! The early 2000s had us all plucking our eyebrows extremely thin, and that was the fad! During these years, we saw our eyebrows get even thinner as pop stars and actresses alike had barely-there eyebrows. Individuals like Christina Aguilera made this eyebrow fad seem totally appealing. This lasted for a couple of years, but many of us regretted partaking in this fad when the next one came around.

Back to Natural — 2005

You can only expect this to be the case once you’ve plucked your eyebrows down to thin, barely-there lines. In the 2005, women started to go back to wearing their eyebrows in the natural shapes that they were born with. Fuller eyebrows became the more popular option and women, again, turned to their makeup pencils to help achieve this look.

Bolder Brows — 2010

Now that natural eyebrows were back in and having full eyebrows was no longer something to be embarrassed about, we started to see the rise of bold eyebrows. Bold brows became a fad when social icons like Kim Kardashian and the rest of her group started to show off their defined and full brows on the red carpet. With such a big following, it didn’t take long for bold eyebrows to become popular. Aside from a few unusual touches and unique looks, this is the primary styling that we see in eyebrows today.

Powerful Arches — 2012

The eyebrows quickly became one of the most prominent and powerful features of the face, which is exactly why it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when people started to create more distinct arches. In 2012, there were more and more eyebrows that were not only bold, but extremely thick, bushy, and shaped to make a statement. We still see a lot of this today.

On Fleek Eyebrows — 2015

If you haven’t used the phrase “On Fleek” about your eyebrows at some point or another, you definitely weren’t prioritizing them as much as some of us. In 2015, everyone was working hard to obtain the Instagram brow that won them the hashtag #OnFleek. Makeup and social media influencers, like Patrick Starrr, were known for having some of the most beautiful brows around. These brows were known for being full, beautiful, and having the perfect fade to the tip.

Unusual Brow Trends — 2017

It’s inevitable that eyebrow trends had to take a weird turn, and it happened around 2017. Throughout this year we saw a handful of looks, including some of the following:

Feathered Eyebrows

Eyebrows that looked like feathers, but there were also eyebrows that had feathers glued to them.

Barbed Wire Eyebrows

This unique look designed eyebrows to look like barbed wire. Parts of it would be simple and flat, but other parts of the eyebrow would spike up and out.

Lightning Bolts

Another unique look that we saw in 2017 was the lightning bolt brows. These brows used a combination of styling and makeup to create brows in the shape of a lighting bolt.

Colorful Brows

If shapes weren’t exactly the look you were going for, eyebrows could be personalized and fun by adding color to them. Some stuck strictly to one singular color while others incorporated all the colors of the rainbow.
